Aurangzeb Movie Review

Mr. Kapoor and Mr. Shroff, stars of an earlier generation, are well cast and well matched. Where a '70s Hindi film might pit villagers against an evil landowner, "Aurangzeb" paints a more complex picture of villainy.
Rachel Saltz-New York Times

Dealing with many subplots, Sabharwal becomes oblivious he is diluting the intensity of the screenplay making it less enthralling for audiences.

Elemental Movie Review

Elemental stands out from the perpetual flow of eco-documentaries by at least glancing at some of the personal issues and professional setbacks faced by the activists it portrays.
Walter V. Addiego-Hearst Newspapers

Elemental speaks to the importance of protecting the natural elements: water, air, earth. It's a beautifully filmed piece, even when it's showing us white clouds of pollutants billowing out of a smokestack.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

The filmmakers behind "Elemental" might have done better to commit to a single portrait and been more fearless about avoiding familiar oratory, but small steps are progress too.
Nicolas Rapold-New York Times

The insightful contrasts within the aggregate picture make up for the film's leisurely pace and lack of narrative propulsion.
Inkoo Kang-Village Voice

It's not the message that matters here, but how Elemental reveals the positive and negative sides of obsession and the personal toll it takes on true believers.
Jamie S. Rich-Oregonian

Inspirational. It finds just the right balance between entertaining the audience and provoking them emotionally and intellectually.
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru

Portraits of three environmental activists and the challenges they face in trying to change people's mindsets and spur them on to help stem the tide of ecological disaster.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

Three eco-activists walk it like they talk it, in a documentary that doesn't have to preach or overload us with statistics to get its message across. Meanwhile, its sobering images of despoiled natural resources vividly speak for themselves.

The tragic aftermath of human carelessness travels around the world in this multi-narrative drama from filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Richard (Brad Pitt) and Susan (Cate Blanchett) are a couple from the United States who have traveled to Morocco in Northern Africa on a vacation after the death of one of their children has sent Susan into a deep depression. Richard and Susan's other two children have been left in the care of Amelia (Adriana Barraza), their housekeeper. Amelia is originally from Mexico, and her oldest son is getting married in Tijuana. Unable to find someone who can watch the kids, or to obtain permission to take the day off, Amelia takes the children with her as she travels across the border for the celebration. Around the same time, in Morocco a poor farmer buys a hunting rifle, and he gives it to his sons to scare off the predatory animals that have been thinning out their goat herd. The boys decide to test the weapon's range by shooting at a bus far away; the shot hits Susan in the shoulder, and soon she's bleeding severely, while police are convinced the attack is the work of terrorists. In Japan, Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) is a teenage deaf-mute whose mother recently committed suicide. This despairing, confused girl experiences such rage and frustration that she causes her volleyball team to lose a match, and later yanks her underwear off and begins exposing herself to boys in a crowded restaurant. Chieko's father then struggles to reach past the emotional distance which separates him and his daughter. Babel earned Alejandro González Iñárritu the prize for Best Director at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi. Babel Movie Review

Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest sprawling, dispersed art-film blockbuster prompts a question: Does he just not know how to tell a story?
Mark Holcomb-Time Out New York

If misery is your pornography, Babel is your holy grail.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

It's a great film made with style and heart and hope, a cautionary parable and an almost certain Oscar contender.
Roger Moore-Orlando Sentinel

The experience of watching Babel is undeniably riveting: Even if the film doesn't really lead anywhere, you still can't take your eyes off it.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

[Iñárritu] remains as entranced as ever by fate, loss and the interconnectedness of humankind, and I admire him for it. But Babel isn't the last or best word on that subject. It's just a lot of talk.
Amy Biancolli-Houston Chronicle

True to its title, Babel hinges on missed and faulty communications of both the personal and the cultural variety. It's a sweeping movie about characters who often suffer from tunnel vision.
Robert Denerstein-Denver Rocky Mountain News

Babel is a beautifully depressing film about responsibility, redemption, and ultimately that there are consequences to people's actions, regardless of who they are and where they live.
Matthew Pejkovic-Matt's Movie Reviews

The gimmick-machinery whirrs, but the human beings in it can't breath
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu and writer Guillermo Arriaga have fashioned their ideas with conviction and obvious care.
S. James Wegg-JWR

Babel...belongs to an unfortunately proliferating genre that might be called the higher kitsch.
Thomas Peyser-Style Weekly (Richmond, VA)

...language acts more as a means to distance and isolate us than aid in our understanding of one another.
Brandon Fibbs-BrandonFibbs.com

A lumbering, stitched-together mess.
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com

Babel directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is one of the most compelling films to date.
Moira Sullivan-Movie Magazine International

an affecting examination of disconnected lives in an interconnected world.
Anton Bitel-Eye for Film

Smart, interesting to look at, and courageous, this is one of the best films of 2006.
Brian Webster-Apollo Guide

There is some hope, in Iñárritu's world, each of the characters may have a family and love, but this is shown to be, at best, a diversion against the real world, which is a much more intolerable, incomprehensive place.
Michael Wade Simpson-culturevulture.net

The kind of film that will echo deep in your soul.
Brian Tallerico-UGO

Alejandro González Iñárritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga cap off the trilogy of films that began with "Amores Perros" and "21 Grams" with a rich and engrossing drama.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

A better title for this film would have been "Murphy's Law," as Inarritu has a relentless grip on the banality of its tenets.
Michelle Orange-Reeler

Rubbish so pretentious it would make the folks behind Crash begin to blush.
Alex Sandell-Juicy Cerebellum

Babel es más que eso, es contradicción y antítesis, es la obra cumbre y gloriosa de un visionario en un retrato triste y dramático de nuestro mundo.
Luis Martinez-Cinenganos

An impressive, beautifully acted work with a tragic sense of life. The formality of its structure controls a seething anger.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Well acted and handsomely photographed, but still extraordinarily overpraised and overblown, a middlebrow piece of near-nonsense: the kind of self-conscious arthouse cinema that is custom-tailored and machine-tooled for the dinner-party demographic.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

You can't make the same film three times and not expect people to carp. Go and see it with politically-minded friends and thrash it out afterwards over coffee.

In 2008, as George W. Bush tried to gift the energy and mining industries thousands of acres of pristine Utah wilderness via a widely disputed federal auction, college student Tim DeChristopher decided to monkey-wrench the process. Bidding $1.7 million, he won 22,000 acres with no intention to drill. For this astonishing (and successful) act of civil disobedience he was sent to federal prison. Beth and George Gage's new documentary BIDDER 70 tells the story of this peaceful warrior whose patriotism and willingness to sacrifice have ignited the climate justice movement. Bidder 70 Movie Review

Though viewers may already be aware of how DeChristopher's 2011 trial ended, the film maintains a gripping air of tension and mystery leading up to the verdict (he was sentenced to two years in federal prison for fraud but released after 21 months).
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

As dully earnest, disorganized and self-righteous as an editorial in a student newspaper ...
Kyle Smith-New York Post

"Bidder 70," for all its clumsiness, nails the way that a spontaneous act of courage can focus the mind and clarify an ideology.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

Seems designed primarily for teach-ins and rallies.
Mark Jenkins-NPR

DeChristopher's ability to move with intellectual seriousness and a light heart between festivals and courtrooms complicates the popular idea of The Man and what his brand of power can achieve.
Diana Clarke-Village Voice

Gripping documentary about a young man who risked a stiff prison sentence for doing something to stop global warming, a crisis that could lead to the deaths of 100 million people.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

Bidder 70 is modest but revitalizing.
Eric Monder-Film Journal International

A powerful, empathetic portrait of a selfless, planetary patriot willing to sacrifice his liberty for the sake of Mother Earth's long-term prospects.
Kam Williams-AALBC.com

Without being didactic, the documentary demonstrates how an ordinary concerned citizen can take a stand when politicians neglect to make decisions for the good of the people and instead serve the interests of big business.

Augustine Movie Review

French physician Jean-Martin Charcot hypnotized, photographed and exhibited a hysteric, as does French director Alice Winocour for a clinical love story and empowerment tale.
Bill Stamets-Chicago Sun-Times

Ultimately, while this character-based drama proves consistently engrossing, it leaves various pertinent and fascinating issues frustratingly unexplored.
Godfrey Cheshire-Chicago Sun-Times

The psychosexual drama plays out beneath the surface -- the movie is so understated it sometimes feels inert.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

Fiercely yet faithfully imagined by... Alice Winocur, [the film] is not exclusively a mystery. It's also part love story, part horror story, as well as a parable of gender, power and the enduring enigma that is the mind-body connection.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

Winocour does not reduce her characters to caricatures, but depicts them as unwitting actors in the tragedy of a pathological society.
Peter Keough-Boston Globe

Though the tone is solemn, I took the finale as a knowing, agreeably dirty joke.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

Unlike some movies that impose feminist views on 200-year-old stories, "Augustine" finds feminist sentiments within the story rather than imposing them from without.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

The stand out is French Pop star Soko as the title character, who gives an outstanding Oscar worthy performance!
Austin Kennedy-Film Geek Central

Emotionally believable performances by Vincent Lindon and Soko can't save Augustine from meandering and being tediously stuck in its 1st act.
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru

Hand-held camera gives contemporary realism amidst the historically correct costumes and surroundings. . .[but] feminist iconography . . .makes the phenomenon seem a charade.
Nora Lee Mandel-Film-Forward.com

[VIDEO ESSAY] Newcomer director Alice Winocour drafts an erotically charged and socially complex telling of a controversial 19th century neurologist and the nubile patient he treats.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

It would be fascinating to know what the writer/director intended here, because the material is so hopelessly muddled.
Nathan Southern-TV Guide's Movie Guide

A lushly filmed, fascinating true story about the relationship between a groundbreaking French doctor and his "hysteric" female patient buries itself with a simplistic approach and deadly-dull dialogue.

33 Postcards Movie Review

Innocence meets experience, unconvincingly, in the strained redemption drama "33 Postcards."
Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times

Were it not for the staccato bursts of violence, this Chinese-Australian co-production about how an adorable orphan brings love into the life of a hardened convict would feel like a film from Hayley Mills' heyday.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

It's all in the name of heartstring tugging, and the film, directed by Pauline Chan ("Little White Lies"), does that pretty well.
Neil Genzlinger-New York Times

There's no explaining the presence of Guy Pearce in Pauline Chan's sappy, atonal family drama. But it's easy enough to understand why he looks so uncomfortable throughout.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

Just when you think it can't get any more sentimental or tack on any more plot detours, the film attempts a clumsy cultural détente as the Chinese children's choir sings "Waltzing Matilda."
Rex Reed-New York Observer

The script's programmatic feel-goodery smooths out everything strange and noteworthy about Dean and Mei Mei's relationship into an unmemorable and unconvincing blandness.
Inkoo Kang-Village Voice

Great Aussie crime thriller droops at the end but pulls through thanks to Guy Pearce.
Ron Wilkinson-Monsters and Critics

The "oh-so-innocent waif and big old baddie" odd-couple formula dates back to D.W. Griffith, but this muddled effort does nothing to merit its questionable revival.
David Noh-Film Journal International

The film has a few good story turns up its sleeve, but prepare yourself for heavy melodrama in the third act.
Jamie S. Rich-Oregonian

Sweet to the point of getting a sugar rush. Underwritten and under-directed in style and realization, it has all the substance of a confection.
Jules Brenner-Cinema Signals

A clunky hybrid-half feel-good weepie, half preposterous thriller-that functions primarily as an elaborate travel brochure ...
Mike D'Angelo-AV Club

Touching story about how the spiritual practice of enthusiasm works wonders in the life of a man in prison.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

33 Postcards is merely the latest in a long line of films to throw in needless crime subplots as a way of shortcutting things emotionally.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

Orphan Mei Mei discovers dubious desired dad Guy Pearce is not exactly what he seems. Nor is this movie, taking a surprising turn away from the conventional, as it embraces collective values over the usual quest and flight into Western individualism.
Prairie Miller-WBAI Radio

Pauline Chan's film is a jumbled mixture of redemptive uplift and genre hijinks.
